A newly created position, the Director, Corporate Labor Relations will be responsible for establishing and driving Mortenson’s enterprise-wide labor relations strategy and processes. A true business partner, the Director, Corporate Labor Relations will serve as internal counsel on project level union/nonunion workforce decisions. This role will help guide Company strategy for craft team members and be the point person responsible for ongoing labor relations oversight. Additionally, the Director, Corporate Labor Relations will be charged with establishing strong relationships with key partners, including unions, trade associations, academic institutions and other stakeholders.

Labor Relations Strategy
- In partnership with senior leadership, articulate Mortenson’s overall labor relations strategy and champion it across the enterprise.
- Support Company and industry efforts to ensure a long-term craft talent pipeline.
- Collaborate with Mortenson leadership to ensure alignment of business and labor strategies across geographies and services.
- Constantly monitor industry, vertical and geographic trends and identify the impact for Mortenson.
- Serve as internal expert on Mortenson’s existing labor agreements.
- Provide subject matter expertise to leaders on all aspects of labor relations.
- Serve as internal counsel to Operations leaders on project-level union/non-union workforce decisions, taking enterprise considerations into account.
- Develop overall company organizational labor relations capability by developing tools/information and providing proactive training for team members and leaders.
- Coach and train Mortenson leaders on positive labor relations approaches.
- Coordinate workforce training and development strategy and activities with the Director, Learning and Development.
Labor Relations Management
- Serve as company representative on various labor agreement negotiations, including project labor agreements.
- Coordinate with Mortenson and external legal counsel on contract obligations, negotiations and/or withdrawals.
- Support response to grievance or other official labor-related proceedings.
- Monitor company obligations to various union benefit/pension funds.
- Work with payroll and operations to insure proper pay and benefit funding practices.
- Maintain company database of labor agreements and advise on renewal decisions.
- Support development of craft labor talent pipelines.
- Represent the Company with external and community stakeholders, effectively working and building relationships with those of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels.
- Build strong relationships with unions, the ACG, the Building Trades Council and other related organizations.

Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will be a seasoned Labor Relations leader with skills and experiences that include the following:
- 10+ years of progressive experience in all areas of labor/management relations in both union and non-union environments, private and Federal sectors, and across multiple geographies, ideally within the construction industry.
- Experience with development and management of enterprise labor relations strategy and processes.
- Experience working with national, local and project level agreements across a wide variety of union types.
- Proven track record of promoting positive union relationships.
- Experience negotiating collective bargaining agreements.
- Proven effectiveness working in both strategic and tactical capacities, including the ability to align key initiatives with broad strategic goals, manage complexity and synthesize and simplify detailed information.
- Proven success as a credible and valued business partner with an ability to coach and counsel leaders and to build relationships at all levels in the Organization; adaptable and flexible with a high EQ and ability to modify approach for effectiveness in various contexts.
- Strong leadership presence with excellent persuasion and influencing capabilities.
- Outstanding communication and listening skills, collaborative and team-oriented work style, confident and appropriately assertive; exceptional conflict resolution skills.
- Background managing craft worker relationships is strongly preferred.
- Possesses traits consistent with Mortenson’s values and LeadBLU practices; thehighest ethical standards are assumed.
- Bachelor’s degree required; J.D. or Master’s degree preferred.
